FARE Actions Week, Tiszabura - 17-18 October PDF Print E-mail

Fare action week 2020

The Mahatma Gandhi Human Rights Organisation organized the two days program in Tiszabura (a village of around 3000 Roma people) as a part of Fare action week.

We started the first day (17 October 2020) with the mayor’s speech and the cultural performance during which one talented Brazilian singer has presented his musical skills. A lot of people have come to participate in educational lectures on such issues as: the drug prevention, the problem of early childbirth and the history of Roma people. The first day program has also included the speech of Rostás Árpád who is a talented and successful restorer and carpenter of Roma origin. The inhabitants of Tiszabura were lively interested in the discussion and they were asking a lot of questions to lecturers. Thanks to that Roma people could learn new things which will be helpful for them in the future.

The next day (18 October 2020) we put the main focus on a sport, using that as a tool to fight discrimination and racism. The program included both football and table tennis tournaments. A lot of young people, both girls and boys, were giving their best in order to win the main prize. After the tournaments the medals and trophies were awarded to the participants.

Our main aim was to show the Roma culture and to emphasize how important is the social inclusion of ethnic minorities, equality, tolerance, anti-racism, education and physical activity. It was our goal since we are aware of the situation of Roma community in Hungary - every day they have to face a lot of problems, such as the high rate of unemployment, the poverty, the prejudices of the majority population, discrimination, rejection, social exclusion and marginalization.
